Adopting a Rescue Dog Rocks
At Awesome Doggies, we wholeheartedly support adopting “rescue” pets. If the advantages of owning a pet are immeasurable, the advantages of adopting a rescue dog are absolutely infinite. If you are thinking of adding a dog to your family, here are some great reasons for considering a rescue dog.
You Don’t Just Save One Life. You Save Two.
Most people realize that adopting a rescue dog saves a life. What they may not realize is that it can actually save TWO. Most dogs at no-kill shelters are dogs that have been rescued from high-kill shelters. These facilities only have so much room and so many resources. When you adopt one pet, you save that pet and make room for another to be rescued from a high-kill shelter.
You Can Be Part of the Solution
By adopting a rescue dog, you become part of the pet overpopulation solution. This means that dogs are saved off the streets and puppy mills will eventually be forced to close down because of a decreased need for breeding.
You Can Find the Perfect Dog and the Perfect Breed
Not only can you find the perfect dog for you and your family, you can find the perfect breed, even if it is a pure breed! While mixed breeds make wonderful pets and come with a host of advantages, don’t rule out a rescue if you want a pure breed. About 25% of the animals in shelters are pure breeds that have made it there through no fault of their own.
Many Rescue Dogs are Already Trained
One of the surprising things about rescue dogs is that many of them have some sort of training, whether it is already being housebroken and leash trained, to more advanced training.
Improved Quality of Life
Adopting a rescue dog is a healthy way to improve quality of life-YOUR life. Dogs make wonderful companions, provide unconditional love, help reduce stress and increase health and longevity. All that from a rescue!
Adopting a rescue dog might take more time and attention, but the rewards are far greater than any extra effort. If you are considering adopting a dog, consider a rescue. You will be so glad you did.
