When you see your dog panting in the hot weather, it’s tempting to consider shearing her coat in order to help her cool off. But is that really the best way to keep your dog cool? Many experts actually advise against shearing a dog’s coat in the summer, especially for breeds that grow double coats. A clean coat can actually help protect a dog against summer heat, especially if the coat is kept clean and detangled. Before shearing your dog’s coat, it’s a good idea to research your dog’s breed and ask your vet or groomer about whether shearing could be a good option for your dog. If you’re really set on the idea of shaving some of that fur off, consider the less drastic option of just shaving your dog’s tummy. A shaved tummy will hardly show, so your dog’s appearance will remain substantially the same as their regular look. (Dogs that get completely shaved often end up looking like completely different animals.) The advantage of having a shaved tummy is that your pup can then lay down on a cool tile floor or in cool grass and feel the coolness on their belly. This helps them feel cooler without a dramatic change in their looks.
In addition to helping keep your house clean, brushing out excess hair is a great way to help keep your dog from overheating. Many dogs naturally shed in the summer in order to maintain a lighter coat during the warmer months, which means that brushing is essential unless you want your house to be covered in fur. If your dog has it, you just can’t miss it. Doggie bad breath is a problem that we reluctantly accept as part of having our furry family member. But bad breath, known as halitosis, is the buildup of decaying bacteria in the mouth that produces the famously foul odor—and it is something that can be treated and improved.
The most common cause of doggie breath is dental or gum disease. Certain dogs, especially small breeds are even more susceptible a buildup of plaque and tartar which causes bad breath. But never assume that bad breath is just an issue with the teeth or gums. It can also indicate other problems in the intestinal track, liver, or a need for professional dental care. We love our fur babies, but not necessarily that one problem that comes with them—shedding. Shedding is a natural process where old fur falls out, allowing new fur to come in. It happens in all breeds (except completely hairless breeds, of course) to some degree. Indoor dogs shed more consistently than outdoor dogs, making it real stressful to keep under control.

Back in 2006, Eve and Norman Fertig found themselves trapped by a storm in an outbuilding on their large property, and animal sanctuary, in upstate New York. Yes, you read that right. A dog.

But they are also a big responsibility, and anyone considering dog adoption should weigh whether it is a commitment that would fit their lifestyle.
You may not remember his name from science class, but 16th century astronomer Tycho Brahe was one crazy guy. In fact, his name was more renowned for his pet moose than he was for his science. And it wasn’t just any old moose; it was a pet that had free range of his home and known to drink more alcohol than humans. Unfortunately, it drank too much beer with dinner, fell down the stairs, and died. Really, look it up.

In 1923, Bobbie became separated from his family while on vacation in Indiana. After an exhaustive search the family gave up hope of finding the Collie/English Shepherd mix and returned to their home in Oregon. Six months later Bobbie showed up at home after having traveled 2,551 miles across the US to find his family. He died at the age if six and was buried with honors at Oregon Humane Society’s pet cemetery.

How long does grooming take?
A lucky few have dogs in their family that love bath time. Some have dogs that will tolerate getting washed moderately well. The vast majority of dogs, however, hate bath time and will do all that they can to sabotage the process – anything from taking off to snarling. An uncooperative dog can make the process difficult, and in the end achieve little except to get everyone soaked. Getting properly groomed is important to your pet’s health, so calling in reinforcements to the front of the bathing battle is a great idea.

Along with the great summer weather comes more time outdoors, and more insects. Like people, animals can become the victim of nasty bites and stings, and their reaction to them can vary from a mild swelling to life-threatening reactions.
Severe and life-threatening reactions might occur is the pet has an allergy or is the victim of multiple stings at once. In addition to swelling, you might notice lethargy, vomiting, panting, or fever. If your pet has come upon a wasps’ nest, swarm of bees, or a yellow jacket’s nest, throw a towel over your pet to keep the insects away, retrieve your pet as soon as it is safe, then transport them to the vet immediately.
The pool is a wonderful place to play and exercise and can be a terrific source of enjoyment. It can also be a huge hazard to your dog. Most people are unaware of the attraction a pool holds for dogs, and the potential dangers. Just like for humans, knowing the risks and how to prevent them can help avoid tragedy.
Consider using a life-vest made for dogs. This will give the added buoyancy needed to stay afloat.

Your dog’s paws are made to endure years of tough play, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t use some TLC along the way. Paws are actually quite sensitive! Dog paws are also important in protecting bones and joints from shock. If your pet’s paws become injured or sore, it could cause problems elsewhere in their joints. It’s worth a little time and attention to make sure your best friend’s tootsies stay in tip-top shape. 
Avoid the necessity! Keep your pet’s coat in good condition. The best way to avoid mats is through regular brushing and/or regular appointments with a professional groomer. Your groomer uses professional grade products designed specifically for your pet’s fur, and may also be able to recommend a haircut that requires less brushing in between grooming appointments.

Grooming is important to your senior dog, but sometimes the process gets difficult to handle for the owner, and for the pet. One of the best ways to help your older dog get the care they need by using a mobile grooming service. When it comes to dog health, the condition of their fur is one of the best indicators of their health, and sometimes one of the first indicators of a problem.
Foul Smell
All dogs go through times of shedding more, then less than average.The lab pictured above is really just experiencing normal, perhaps seasonal shedding. If the shedding becomes excessive it’s time to consider the cause. A dog might shed excessively because of stress, a change in surroundings, diet, seasons, or even lactation. Sometimes the problem can be internal and indicate hormonal problems or other health issues, and sometimes it’s as simple as a natural response to the change in seasons. The coat condition shown at left might look severe, but it’s actually normal for this type of dog. The picture shows a phenomenon known as “blowing coat” which happens once or sometimes twice a year for certain breeds. It’s not indicative of a health problem, it’s just their coat changing in response to the seasons. It’s sort of like a snake shedding it’s skin, but maybe more accurately, it’s like your dog is taking off their winter coat and putting on a summer jacket! Even though we don’t have cold winter weather here in San Diego, sometimes the breeds that have fur meant for cold weather will “change their coat” even though it isn’t strictly necessary. Good luck telling them to stop it! Lots of brushing and a deshedding session will get your pet through it and back to normal again.

Although we sometimes believe that chewing hard food or on chew toys is enough to clean our pet’s teeth, nothing is further from the truth. While a chew toy can help improve oral heath and tooth strength, your pet still needs the advantage of regular and thorough cleaning.

Traditionally we think of cats as being perfectly capable of grooming themselves, but there are some situations where we need to give our kitty friends a little help. If your cat has long hair, this is not a condition Mother Nature intended, and they need help dealing with it. Long haired cats need regular brushing and occasional bathing to keep their fur from becoming tangled and matted. If you or your kids are sleeping with the cat, you’ll want to be sure that kitty is kept nice and clean with a regular bath. And all cats benefit from brushing, which also helps to remove loose hairs and reduce shedding around the house. Cats often need to have their claws trimmed. Elderly cats (both short and long haired) often need to be bathed quite regularly as they age, because as their joints become stiff, they lose flexibility and are unable to keep themselves clean. In all of these situations, cats need help with grooming. You can either call a 
Restrain Gently
Don’t try to do everything in one session, especially if you are just getting started. Brush only as long as your cat will tolerate it. Work on one area per session. If there are many tangles, just work on one each day. Break your grooming up so that instead of one marathon session, you do several shorter ones. You could trim nails one day, 
If your dog’s teeth look anything like the picture on the left , professional dental care is definitely needed, and will likely help considerably with the bad breath issue. Your dog may simply need to have plaque buildup on their teeth scaled off, or the problem could be more severe. Your vet can provide an evaluation. Just like people, dogs get cavities, broken teeth, and abscesses that require root canals. Your vet can fix all these things while your dog is under local anesthesia. Once your dog’s teeth are clean and healthy, you can help keep them that way by brushing or wiping with a wet washcloth on a regular basis. Here are some tips on how to get started brushing your dog’s teeth. Plenty of dog treats, supplements, and even chew toys are sold on the basis of being helpful in keeping dogs teeth clean, but really, brushing or wiping their teeth regularly is one of the best things you can do to keep your dog’s breath under control.
When you’re a pet owner, grooming your dog is just one of those responsibilities that comes along as part of the deal. We know it can be hard to find time to brush and bathe your pet — that’s what keeps us employed as professional groomers. But if your pet is so aggressive that you don’t want to groom him – because he snaps, growls, or bites – then some extra work is going to be needed.
However, if you’ve adopted an adult or senior pet (which is a wonderful thing to do), you may find yourself dealing with behavior issues associated with trauma from your dog’s previous life. Many dogs become afraid or even aggressive when someone tries to groom them, particularly if they’ve had bad experiences with grooming, or simply been mistreated by humans in their past. However, that doesn’t mean that you can just forget the whole grooming thing. On the contrary, it means you need to work at it more, so that your dog becomes less fearful, more relaxed and eventually can even enjoy the grooming experience.

Everyone knows that animals are made to be outside — that’s why Mother Nature gave them fur, right? However, there is quite a lot to be said for keeping your cat indoors, instead of letting him free to roam the outdoors world. Cats actually took up residence indoors with humans in Egypt around 2500 B.C., which is when the controversy first began about whether a cat should be kept indoors with the family or outdoors with the other animals…and it has been raging ever since.
Indoor cats live on average for 12 to 20 years; Outdoor cats live on average for one to five years.
The first thing to do is bathe your kitten in a dish or sink of warm (not hot!) water with a natural unscented shampoo intended for cats. Soap the kitten up good, avoiding getting soap in its face, and let the soapy solution sit for five minutes if you can. The water and suds will help smother the fleas, and will help with removal of flea eggs. Some all-natural shampoos contain ingredients that weaken the flea’s shells, which is helpful, but basically at this stage you are just going for physically removing the little critters by washing or rinsing them off the kitten. It’s not necessary to waste time shopping and waiting for a special flea shampoo to arrive. Just get a bath done ASAP with a very gentle general pet shampoo so that you can get on with the process of removing the fleas.
Many people realize that licking is a form of communication for dogs, but you may not know that this instinctual behavior serves some practical purposes as well. A mother dog licks her puppies to remove the birthing membrane and to stimulate them to nurse. She also licks their backsides to stimulate elimination. Later as they grow older, she will lick them to check them over, and in the process give a little cleaning up. When a mother dog licks her pups, it looks like motherly love, and it might actually be, but it has practical benefits as well.
A modest amount of licking over a short period of time is likely just self comforting — the same kind of thing as when when you stick your own thumb in your mouth after hitting it with a hammer. But keep an eye on a dog that is constantly 
But by far the most common reason that a dog licks is because he is craving attention. You may get licked enthusiastically when you wake up in the morning, or return home each day. You may also notice that your dog will lick your hands or face when you are watching TV, trying to work, or otherwise occupied. This is because they want your attention on them, not on other things. If you laugh when your dog licks you, it encourages the behavior, because you are rewarding her with a warm, happy sound that gives positive reinforcement. If her licks get you to pat her, feed her, or do other good things, you can expect her to repeat the licking behavior in the future.
Most people just want their furry family members to look clean, and smell good. But some folks go beyond that — far, far beyond that, into what I call “the Far Side” of pet grooming. Today we thought we’d take a look at a few peculiar trends in pet grooming that you may not know you’ve been missing. From multicolored poodles to a full body mohawk on a dog, pet owners have tried them all, and while some styles are adorable, a few are just totally out there.
Braiding your dog’s hair is a modern trend that most little girls will love. No longer do they have to practice on their dolls, because all they have to do is reach out to the family dog and their yen to fuss with hair can be satisfied. Poor pups, the little girls will go wild with this one. Can we expect undying loyalty and absolute stillness from your pet while our daughters practice their skills? You tell me!
And how about this one: feline ink. The trend hasn’t moved outside of Russia yet, but is currently all the rage in Moscow. Hairless kitty tattoos are becoming popular there. Do we dare hope that they never make it to America? Somehow tattooing a kitty cat doesn’t seem like the best idea to me. The cats have to go under anesthesia for the procedure. It’s controversial. 
I think I’ll vote for Standard Poodles as the breed “most likely” to be on the receiving end of what I call “Far Side grooming.” Standard Poodles can be clipped and colored to look like camels, pandas, peacocks, ponies, buffaloes, and more. It really is amazing (in a looking-at-a-car-wreck kind of way) what can be done with dog hair, clippers, and dye. Do you recognize Leonardo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? 
Have you ever wondered why dogs are trained to heel on the left? Or whether your dog is right pawed or left pawed? And why do we mount a horse from the left? As a matter of fact, why do we do almost anything from the left?
The tradition of training of a dog to heel on the left follows basically the same principle as the mounting of the horse. For most people, their right hand is usually the stronger hand, so when you are walking dogs, the theory is that you want them on your left side, so that you can hold the leash with your left hand, leaving the stronger dominant hand free to defend yourself in case of danger. In today’s modern world where personal security is less likely to require combat (we hope!!), many dog owners train their dogs to heel on either side, although this often is simply due to a lack of knowledge of the traditional “correct” way of doing things, more than a conscious choice.
Dogs are known to be either right pawed or left pawed; something that most people never think about. The best way to find out which paw your dog uses most is by placing some peanut butter or other favorite treat in a Kong. Place the Kong on the floor and see which paw your dog uses most to touch the Kong. Repeat the test over a period of time and keep track of the results. If he uses his right paw 2/3 of the time (say 66 times out of 100), then he is right-pawed. Make sure that you don’t count the times that he uses both paws.

One of my favorite childhood memories is waking up one Christmas morning and discovering a brand new puppy romping in my bed. Getting a new pet for Christmas is a wonderful and memorable gift to give your loved ones, but make sure your family is prepared (ours wasn’t.) And please consider adopting from one of the San Diego animal shelters, or a local rescue group. 
You can be confident that any pet you adopt from a shelter will have a clean bill of health, or that any known medical issues will be full disclosed. Most shelters give their animal all of their shots and check to make sure that they are not sick before they putting up for adoption. Many shelters make sure that strays are spayed or neutered, and microchipped as well. Well run shelters also screen their pets to identify any behavior issues, and will try to avoid placing an animal in an environment where they are likely to get in trouble. Don’t be surprised if you have to answer a few personal questions in order to be “considered” for adoption. Good shelters can be surprisingly choosy about who they allow to adopt their pets, but it’s all in the best interest of the animal — they just want to find a home environment in which both dogs and humans will be happy together. There aren’t necessarily any right or wrong answers to the questions you’ll be asked (Do you have small children in the home? Do you have a yard?) The goal is to help you find a pet that is well suited to your situation and abilities. 
Everyone knows that when a cat comes into a home, it quickly takes over and rules the roost. Of course, the cat can’t speak, but they do have pet peeves and they do have ways of making those known. You can tell by a cat’s body language when they are upset about something. Take a look around and you will soon find it. Here are a few reasons your cat may have an attitude:
Being Ignored
If you’ve got a dog that loves to ride in the car, you probably enjoy taking them along on longer trips as well as short outings around town. The dog is of course excited to ride in the car for a variety of reasons. For one (and I think this is the biggie), he is getting to go somewhere with you; two, he thinks the possibilities are endless as to where you will end up, and three, it’s fun. If your dog loves to ride in the car, they probably would love to stick their heads out the window as much as possible. The breeze on his face probably feels just as good to your pet as it does to you, and with his extra sensitive smelling, it probably feels just amazing. But we don’t let dogs and kids do things just because they are fun. As guardians, our role is to keep our loved ones safe. 
Unless you’re opting for a very low-maintenance haircut, you’ll probably need to do some grooming at home in between visits from the groomer. The two most important things you can do at home are brushing and dental care. Oral hygiene will boil down to a daily teeth brushing or the use of a plaque-busting gel like PlaqClnz. Brushing will need to be done weekly for most doodles, but some with exceptionally troublesome or long coats may need as much as daily work.
Anyone who lives with a cat will most likely tell you that they didn’t choose the cat; the cat chose them. Cats are independent individuals and they don’t mind letting people know it. When a cat moves in, you might as well accept that the cat now owns your home and you are just allowed to live there. Cats are truly superior beings (at least in their own minds), but from the human point of view, they do some pretty crazy things.
Cats have been known to declare that anything that hits the floor belongs to them. Whether it’s your shoes or the lid from the milk carton; if it hits the floor it quickly becomes the cats property, just like everything else in the house…including you.

One of the best perks of being a dog owner in San Diego is our beautiful dog-friendly beaches. From Coronado to Ocean Beach, Fiesta Island to Del Mar, dogs sure do have it good here in San Diego! And the weather cooperates all year long. Even when the rest of the country is cooling down, we’re still up for a trip to the beach! The one downside of letting your pup play in the water is the mess you risk taking home with you – sand, saltwater, and all kinds of smells. Create a Calm Atmosphere
Find a position that works best for you and your kitty while cutting her claws. Whether you hold your cat in your lap or nestle your kitten under your arm, it’s important to grasp the cat with a firm hold. Free one hand so that you can apply light pressure to the middle of a paw, fanning the toes out and extruding the claws (this is the part you practice beforehand so that you and your cat are both used to it before you pick up the clippers.)
Reward Great Behavior
I don’t know about you, but as the end of the year approaches and the weather gets a little cooler, I often find my thoughts turning to ….baking. Unfortunately for my waistline, I love to bake. I’ve recently discovered that baking for my dog is a great way to indulge my inner Martha Stewart without expanding my waistline. Baking your own dog treats also ensures that your dog is getting all natural, healthy and energizing snacks that are good for them. Store bought treats can have a lot of junk in them, and IMHO are to be avoided! Homemade treats are a perfect snack, and also make great gifts for friends who have dogs.

Have you ever wondered why your dog is determined to sit on your feet, as soon as you sit down in your chair, or even while you are standing? Believe it or not, it’s not just because they want to put your feet to sleep; there are other reasons, some of them good, some not so good. The reason that a dog sits on your feet has a lot to do with the temperament of the dog itself. From loving dogs to nervous dogs, they all have a reason for doing what they do. The question is, do you mind, and if so, can you live with it?

If your cat allergies are impacting your quality of life, talk to your doctor about allergy medicine and other options; some cat owners get shots to help deal with pet allergies. But happily, in most cases, a few lifestyle changes are enough to keep allergy symptoms at bay. Following the steps above can help keep allergy symptoms under control, and make it possible for you and your kids to fully enjoy the family furball. Of course talk to your doctor and use common sense depending on the severity of your reactions.
Introducing Your Pets
As a pet parent, you typically have two choices when it comes to finding a professional pet sitter: paying a qualified house sitter who is also an expert in dealing with animals, or hiring someone to come into your house daily to check on your pets. There are advantages to both.
Whichever person you choose, professional references need to be checked and a personal interview conducted with the sitter and the manager of the potential sitter’s service, if you’re using a service rather than an individual.
We’ve all seen dogs communicate – with a lot of sniffing “you-know-where.” While it might be annoying to watch our dog sniff the behind of every other canine he or she comes across, that’s how they identify others in their species. I guess as humans we are lucky that we rely on sight, not smell for identification!
If expressing anal glands sounds gross, that’s because it can be. This isn’t a job for the squeamish. You’ll need gloves, tissues, and a lot of bravery. Whatever you do – don’t do this over carpet. The liquid released can have a strong, foul odor. Once it gets into your carpet, the smell will last. The glands are found at the very end of the anal cavity, one on either side of the anus, located generally around 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock. There are two recognized methods of expressing the glands. With the external method of expressing anal glands, you press on the outside with a tissue over the anus (kind of like popping a zit). With the

Hear Doggy Martians
Most pet owners are familiar with how traditional groom shops work. You load your pet into the car and head off to the groomer. Once at the groom shop, your pet spends the day being cleaned and primped. One person may check them in, while another brushes and bathes, and yet another wields the clippers and scissors. Your baby hangs out in a cage while not being worked on, which is probably also where they are dried – by a hot fan hooked on the cage door to blow on them automatically, as controlled by a timer. Hours later, at the end of the day, you drive back to pick up your pet and bring them home again.
There is nothing worse than that feeling we get as pet parents when our fur babies become ill. That overwhelming helplessness that says, “If only I had known sooner….,” can be rife with guilt and regret.
Who hasn’t laughed at the sight of a puppy chasing it’s tail? Probably all puppies have played this game at some point. They notice – or are surprised by – this appendage that seems to be following them around, then twist and turn trying to catch it. A puppy chasing his tail is as common as a child spinning in circles.

Short-Haired Dogs
Wondering if you can trim your dog’s or cat’s nails at home? The answer is, “yes” you can do this — if you have time, don’t mind taking the time to perform the chore, and will learn to do it properly. You can also have a vet or pet groomer do it for you. Your pet’s paws are just as important to them as your feet are to you — they stand on them all day long, and all of their body weight is supported on them. So it’s important to keep their paws and claws in good shape. Here’s a quick primer on 
Groomers are trained to deal with all types of dogs and cats. Even animals that are skittish and those that do outright battle to avoid having their nails trimmed can generally be handled by a professional pet groomer. Many owners have accidentally caused their pet pain by cutting the nails too short. When this happens, you learn the hard way that the nail quick has blood rich veins. If cut too short, nails will bleed. Although pets are prone to moving at just the wrong time, groomers are well trained to take precautionary measures, and have the best chance of avoiding clipping into the quick.
Brushing Your Persian Cat
Gently comb or brush the cat’s fur in the direction of growth, using a good comb (like the “greyhound” comb pictured here), or a good quality pin brush or slicker brush will also work. Whatever type of grooming tool is your preference, be sure you are brushing all the way through the coat, down to the skin. A common rookie mistake is to think you are done when the top coat looks beautifully smooth. But if you dig down underneath or look in the armpits, you’ll often find a nest of tangles hiding. Part the hair with your hands until you see the skin — and make sure you are brushing all the way down! Any place you see curly hair, those are problem areas that need to be brushed out.

That Good Old Lovin’ Feeling
If you and your long-haired cat are tired of all the brushing that’s required to keep your feline furball from matting, a lion clip (also known as a “lion cut”) may be just what you and your kitty are looking for.
Why Should My Cat Get a Lion Cut?
Color Changes: Be aware that with some types of coats, a color change will be revealed when the long coat is shaved away. The most dramatic differences are typically seen on tabby-type coats. Shaving doesn’t change the color of the coat, it just reveals the color low on the shaft, which is normally hidden from view.
You might want to ask your groomer to give your long-haired bombshell a “Chenille Clip.” This simply means clipping down the hair all over the body to about the same length as a short haired cat. A chenille clip leaves the cat looking much more natural – no mane, often no tassel or booties – it just looks like a short haired cat. One word of caution – special equipment is required to do this cut safely. Don’t try this at home using just regular clippers and blades. Chenille clips are a great option for kitties who are extra squirmy, or who can only tolerate grooming for a very limited amount of time. A chenille clip is faster and safer than the close-to-the-skin shaving associated with a lion clip.

Place all supplies and documents in waterproof plastic baggies – this helps protect them from damage and keeps your kit organized. First aid supplies should include: * A roll of self-cling bandage (the kind that sticks to itself, not fur). * Sterile gauze pads (alternatively, sanitary napkins are also highly effective). * A rectal thermometer and lubricant. * Pet first aid guide. * Hydrogen peroxide. * Saline solution and an empty syringe (for flushing wounds). * Rubber gloves and hand cleaner (for first aider). * Tweezers and scissors. * A muzzle. * A canine-specific airway device for CPR.
Cat owners can help relieve their kitties from the discomfort of hairballs by removing excess fur from their cats using a specialized grooming tool such as the Furminator [http://www.furminator.com/]. Cat owners may also want to enlist the help of a professional groomer who can de-shed and clip the cat’s fur shorter; this minimizes the excess fur that leads to hairballs in cats.
San Diego has a number of dog parks that provide city-dwellers the chance to romp off leash with their fur friends. Roughly stated, a dog park is a fenced-in area where dogs are allowed to run around off leash just for fun. Owners socialize, while fur friends frolic. Sounds like fun, right? Generally it is, but it’s best to be prepared. If you’ve never been to a dog park before, give it a little thought before going the first time. Safety and good manners are the name of the game. Here are a few things to consider:
Is Your Dog Ready For A Dog Park Visit?
Be prepared to leave immediately – and preferably at the first sign of trouble. Dog fights can happen at dog parks, and you don’t want your pet involved. Not every visitor to the dog park is a good canine citizen, and not all owners are responsible and attentive. If you see a dog threatening the other animals, remove your dog from the area immediately until somebody corrals the beast causing problems. Keep your leash draped around your neck at all times.
Expect To Have Fun

Professional Teeth Brushing
The next step involves getting your dog used to having something is his mouth, brushed up against his teeth. Pinch some toothpaste on your finger, and gently rub it across the dog’s front canines, which will be the easiest to access and give you both practice. If your dog accepts this, give him a few rubs and a treat, maybe even a walk – whatever reward system works for you. The idea is to keep your dog happy with what’s happening, and wanting more.
After your dog is used to the toothpaste against the teeth, you need to get him familiar with the toothbrush and/or dental sponge that you will be using. Getting your dog familiar with the bristles of the toothbrush will probably be the hardest part, but this is also the most important part. Now, put some toothpaste on the toothbrush, and let the dog lick it off the bristles, getting him familiar the feel of the toothbrush. Just like before, if he obeys and licks the toothpaste off of the brush, reward him. Continue doing this for about a week, giving your dog enough time to get familiar with the whole procedure.
While most people know to some extent that cat whiskers provide more of a function than just looking adorable, they may not know just how important these whiskers are to our furry little friends. If you are a cat owner, you may notice that when you take your pet to the groomer, they never trim the cat’s whiskers, and you also may notice that the whiskers tend to change position from time to time. Cat’s whiskers are actually quite amazing, and here are some fun and interesting facts about them.

Although it’s a common belief that you can’t or shouldn’t bathe cats, this is actually far from the truth. While cats often do excel at self-cleaning, some breeds, especially long-haired varieties, will probably need some grooming assistance to stay clean and mat free. And of course if you have a curious kitty prone to mischief, situations may arise that necessitate bathing to remove oil, excessive dirt and grime or something that’s gotten on their coat that could harm if ingested. And of course if your feline friend brings home fleas, you may find your fur buddy in need of a flea shampoo. Regular bathing also helps keep shedding under control.

Another fun event is the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon that raises funds for orphaned animals at the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Owners and their pets will participate in 20-minute heats based on the dog’s weight class. They will be judged on their ability to ride the waves, having fun and staying on their boards. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for each weight class and the first place winner will move on to the finals. This event will help raise awareness and money for orphaned pets while promoting responsible pet ownership. Interactive sponsor tents will be on site for pet owners and their families, providing lots of fun activities for everyone. Helen Woodward Animal Center will be on site with adoptable dogs and trained professionals to answer any type of animal related question. HWAC will also have an interactive tent with fun games and crafts for children and pets to play.
