When it comes to being a responsible pet owner, it’s important to plan for the unexpected. Just as you should always have a first aid kit on hand for humans, also have a first aid kit that’s custom-made for your four-legged family members. And while a number of pet-supply companies offer ready-made emergency kits for dogs, it’s easy and affordable for pet owners to assemble their own kit using common items that are usually already on hand.
The Basics
Start by finding a suitable container for your doggie first aid kit. If you’re always on the go, consider packing everything into a small knapsack that can be toted along on hikes and vacations. Here’s the basics to include in your kit: * Pet-specific emergency contact numbers; list your vet, your local 24-hour emergency vet hospital and the ASPCA poison info center (1-800-426-4435). * Photocopies of vaccination and rabies shot records along with a list of any medications or known conditions your dog has – remember that in an emergency, you might not be available to provide this information to the first responder or vet.
Place all supplies and documents in waterproof plastic baggies – this helps protect them from damage and keeps your kit organized. First aid supplies should include: * A roll of self-cling bandage (the kind that sticks to itself, not fur). * Sterile gauze pads (alternatively, sanitary napkins are also highly effective). * A rectal thermometer and lubricant. * Pet first aid guide. * Hydrogen peroxide. * Saline solution and an empty syringe (for flushing wounds). * Rubber gloves and hand cleaner (for first aider). * Tweezers and scissors. * A muzzle. * A canine-specific airway device for CPR.
Additional supplies may include pain medications, antibiotic ointments, products to induce vomiting and antihistamines to treat bug bites and stings. Consult with your veterinarian about which emergency treatments are safe to use for your particular dog.
Dogs by their curious and rambunctious nature are susceptible to a range of injuries and illnesses. By having a first aid kit at the ready, you will be prepared to respond quickly and efficiently to basic canine mishaps. To further increase your readiness, consider taking a pet first aid course!
